Position Summary
​
The Director of Nursing for Employee Health oversees the daily operations, clinical services, and regulatory compliance of the Employee Health Services Department. This role provides direct urgent care to employees, volunteers, and visitors as a credentialed Nurse Practitioner and serves as the nursing coordinator for the organization’s emergency management program. Clinical performance as an NP is reviewed by the Medical Director for the Department of Medicine.

The Director ensures safe, high‑quality, and efficient delivery of employee health services while supporting organizational safety initiatives, infection prevention, and workforce wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Operations

Participate in developing and implementing patient and employee safety initiatives.

Monitor and support patient safety programs across the organization.

Ensure safekeeping and proper management of medications, emergency equipment, supplies, and required documentation.

Oversee maintenance and functionality of all equipment and supplies used in Employee Health.

Conduct hospital‑wide rounds and maintain regular communication with administrators, managers, and staff across all locations.

Encourage transparent reporting of safety occurrences without fear of reprisal.

Review staff and visitor occurrences to identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
-
Define goals, objectives, and performance outcomes for Employee Health and related programs.

Collaborate with leadership to develop and manage operating and capital budgets.
-
Ensure compliance with OSHA, The Joint Commission, NYSDOH, NYCDOHMH, and other regulatory bodies.

Provide guidance to departments on safety policies and procedures.
Staffing & Performance Management
-
Plan, supervise, and coordinate activities to ensure compassionate, competent, and compliant care.

Evaluate systems and processes to enhance quality and efficiency within Employee Health.
-
Conduct ongoing and annual performance evaluations for assigned staff.
-
Counsel and discipline staff as needed, documenting all interventions.
-
Assess learning needs and coordinate continuing education for Employee Health staff.
-
Provide organization‑wide education on wellness, safety, and employee health requirements.
-
Ensure adequate staffing coverage and approve attendance and payroll records.
-
Participate in interviewing, hiring, and upgrading staff within the department.
-
Submit required reports to NYCDOHMH, NYSDOH, NHSN, and other regulatory agencies.
Clinical Responsibilities (Nurse Practitioner)

Perform pre‑placement exams, fitness‑for‑duty evaluations, and return‑to‑work assessments.
-
Provide urgent care, medical assessments, and treatments for employees, volunteers, and visitors.

Participate in the Rapid Response Team as needed.
-
Conduct annual health assessments for staff, consultants, and volunteers.
-
Make referrals to external providers or emergency services when appropriate.
-
Oversee regulatory requirements including fit testing, TB screening, vaccinations, and infection monitoring.

Manage health screenings and maintain health records for employees, students, volunteers, and consultants.
-
Report staff infections to Infection Control and monitor trends to recommend interventions.
-
Direct and support the RN Surveillance Nurse in infection control activities.
Quality & Compliance
-
Promote a collaborative environment aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and nursing philosophy.
-
Participate in committees and subcommittees; co‑chair the Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Infections Committee.

Lead Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities for assigned areas.
-
Utilize performance improvement tools to identify indicators and enhance care delivery.
-
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Communication & Collaboration
-
Foster a culture of teamwork, professional growth, and open communication.

Share relevant updates from leadership and regulatory agencies with staff.

Maintain confidentiality in all communications.

Collaborate with the Medical Director and administration on employee safety, illness, and work status concerns.

Work effectively with administrators, managers, and staff across the organization.

Adhere to legal, ethical, and compliance standards; escalate concerns appropriately.

Serve as co‑chair of the Safe Patient Handling Committee.
Qualifications

Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in New York State; Master’s degree required.
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred or in progress.
-
Minimum 5 years of medical‑surgical experience; occupational health experience preferred.

Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse Specialist (COHN‑S) preferred or in progress.
-
Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology preferred or in progress.
-
Demonstrated clinical competency as a Nurse Practitioner.

Strong critical thinking, autonomy, and leadership skills.
