About the Role

​

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Nursing Supervisor to oversee patient care operations during assigned shifts. The Nursing Supervisor provides leadership and direction to nursing staff, ensuring that high-quality, safe, and compassionate care is delivered in accordance with the New York State Nurse Practice Act, established standards of nursing care, and geriatric best practices.

This position plays a critical role in managing patient care units, coordinating staffing, promoting patient safety, and maintaining smooth operations across departments.

 

Key Responsibilities

​

Safety & Patient Care

  • Promote a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement by encouraging open reporting of incidents.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of safety recommendations and programs.

  • Ensure emergency procedures (e.g., Rapid Response, fire drills, disaster drills) are carried out effectively.

  • Respond to patient care needs across departments (Home Care, Hospice, Ambulatory Care) during assigned shifts.

  • In the absence of Employee Health staff, provide triage for employee emergencies and coordinate with the On-Call MD.

  • Secure necessary equipment or supplies for in-house patient needs.

 

Planning & Staffing

  • Assess patient acuity and census to determine appropriate staffing levels for the tour of duty.

  • Adjust staff assignments and utilize overtime judiciously to ensure adequate coverage.

  • Review pending admission requests, coordinate patient placement, and ensure smooth admission processes.

  • Monitor unit coverage during patient activities and ensure effective communication with medical staff.

  • Coordinate weekend and holiday coverage, and manage in-house operations in the absence of administrators.

  • Supervise float pool personnel and manage staff scheduling in collaboration with the staffing office.

 

Performance & Leadership

  • Provide feedback on staff performance to Patient Service Managers and Nursing Administration.

  • Conduct evaluations for float staff, establish measurable goals, and ensure timely completion.

  • Counsel and, when necessary, discipline staff in accordance with hospital policy and documentation standards.

  • Mentor and support nursing personnel to foster professional growth and excellence in patient care.

  • Promote teamwork and model the hospital’s philosophy of caring, integrity, and respect.

 

Quality & Compliance

  • Participate in the development, interpretation, and implementation of hospital and nursing policies.

  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and submit reports to Nursing Quality and Infection Control leadership as assigned.

  • Stay current on trends in nursing practice through continuing education, workshops, and seminars.

  • Ensure compliance with all legal, ethical, and professional standards of nursing practice.

 

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as a clinical resource and leader for nursing staff and other hospital departments.

  • Resolve conflicts among staff, patients, and families in a professional and empathetic manner.

  • Communicate effectively with the oncoming supervisor or unit managers during shift handoffs.

  • Participate in hospital and departmental meetings or committees as assigned.

  • Provide patient and family education as appropriate, ensuring understanding of procedures and care plans.

  • Maintain accurate, thorough documentation of all incidents, communications, and follow-up actions.

 

Qualifications

​

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing

  • Current New York State RN license and registration

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required; Master’s degree preferred

  • BCLS required; ACLS certification optional

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of progressive leadership or management experience

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and report-writing skills

  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting patient safety and quality care
