Position Summary

 

We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Chief Physicist to provide administrative and clinical oversight of physics and dosimetry services across a multi-site cancer center network. Reporting under the operational direction of Radiation Oncology Directors/Hospital Administration and programmatic guidance of the System Radiation Oncology Medical Director, this leader will be responsible for staffing, training, standardization, QA, technology evaluation, and collaboration with academic/research partners.

 

The Chief Physicist will play a pivotal role in shaping protocols, ensuring compliance, advancing radiation oncology innovation, and mentoring the next generation of physicists and dosimetrists.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Administration

  • Develop and deploy standard operating procedures, QA programs, and protocols for physics and dosimetry services across the metro cancer centers.

  • Oversee staffing, orientation, cross-training, and competency development for physicists and dosimetrists.

  • Lead peer review, training, and performance improvement initiatives.

 

Clinical & Technical Oversight

  • Evaluate, commission, and implement new technology for radiation oncology services.

  • Support IT integration of Aria/Eclipse/Epic platforms for optimized clinical workflows.

  • Coordinate support for complex procedures including IORT, TBI, CyberKnife®, and advanced stereotactic treatments.

  • Provide physics expertise for radiation safety programs in collaboration with the System Radiation Safety Officer.

Collaboration & Research

  • Partner with the System Medical Director and oncologists to design evidence-based treatment protocols.

  • Support clinical trials and research initiatives via the Cancer Center Clinical Trials Committee.

  • Develop and expand collaborations with Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), including peer review programs, training, standardized protocols, and residency programs.

  • Participate in Graduate Medical Education (GME) initiatives for radiology resident education in radiation oncology.

 

Strategic Development

  • Lead long-term planning for system-wide physics and dosimetry initiatives.

  • Ensure all services align with regulatory standards (state, federal, accrediting agencies).

 

Required Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Master’s Degree in Medical Physics (PhD preferred).

  • ABR or ACMP certification required.

  • BLS certification within 14 days of hire.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in hospital-based radiation oncology.

  • Prior experience as a Chief Physicist or senior leadership in medical physics.

 

Skills

  • Advanced computer literacy.

  • Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills.

  • Detail-oriented with proven ability to manage multi-site clinical programs.

 

Employment Details

  • Job Type: Full-time, Exempt

  • Schedule: Standard hospital schedule with occasional cross-site responsibilities.

  • Work Environment: Hospital-based cancer centers with anticipated exposure to radiation, chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and airborne diseases.

  • Functional Demands: Medium level – occasional lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 200 lbs.
